Dear Member of Congress:

The United States faces serious economic challenges that require continued bipartisan cooperation if our nation is going to continue to be a leader in the global economy. Trade Promotion Authority (TPA)/Fast Track has been a critical tool since 1974, and will expire on June 30th of this year. Trade for America, which represents a wide range of companies and trade associations from virtually every sector of the U.S. economy, is committed to working with Congress and the Executive Branch to reauthorize TPA/Fast Track to help meet these challenges. This cooperative effort is critically important for a wide range of reasons—

TPA is needed because the United States must continue to look to international trade and investment to expand markets in order to grow our economy; 95 percent of the world’s population is beyond our borders.

TPA is required in order to achieve a successful completion of the Doha Round of trade talks, which provide the single greatest opportunity to reduce barriers globally.

TPA is needed to move forward on new bilateral, sub-regional and regional trade agreements so that the United States can keep pace with our largest economic competitors; Brazil, China, the EU, India and Japan, which are all moving to negotiate new bilateral and regional trade agreements that will put our businesses, farmers and workers at a serious disadvantage.

TPA is needed because today, one in five U.S. jobs – more than 31 million – is related to international trade and investment. To preserve and create economic opportunities for U.S. workers, farmers and companies, our country cannot sit on the sidelines as competitor nations engage in aggressive economic diplomacy on behalf of their companies and workers.

Trade for America believes that the key question for the United States is not whether to participate in the global economy, but how to ensure that we can be equipped to lead, to compete, and to win. Along with TPA, we support initiatives that will improve America’s competitiveness in the global economy. For example, it is vital to our country’s economic future that we take steps to provide U.S. workers and farmers with the new skills necessary to compete in the global economy. One important way to do this, that Trade for America strongly supports, is through renewing and modernizing the Trade Adjustment Assistance program to help broaden the benefits of trade.

Trade for America is committed to working on these critical initiatives and hopes that in the months ahead we can move forward in renewing TPA and promoting the United States’ success in the global economy.
