Statement by Bob Stallman, President,
American Farm Bureau Federation,
Regarding the Need for Congress
To Approve Trade Promotion Authority

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 16, 2007 – “Future economic opportunities for America’s farmers and ranchers depend largely on our nation’s ability to create expanded trading opportunities. By passing trade promotion authority, Congress will help our trade negotiators secure greater access to world markets for our farm goods.

“The best chances for progress and to secure positive outcomes for the United States is for our lawmakers to come together to provide trade promotion authority for the administration. TPA approval will provide our negotiators the authority they need to address the many trade barriers faced by American agriculture.

“Agriculture wants the U.S. to continue its work to open markets, expand economic development and support a strong rules-based trading system.  In order to be effective, TPA must be dedicated to expanding trade between nations.  Without the ability to conclude bilateral, regional and multilateral trade agreements, the U.S. will be forfeiting potential markets and economic leadership to our competitors.

“We look forward to working with Congress to support the continued expansion of trade opportunities for America’s farmers and ranchers.”
